Madewell: Denim Fits, the Recycling Programme and Sale Timing

Madewell is primarily a denim business with a clothing range attached, and the denim is where the buying decisions concentrate.

The denim fits

Madewell names its fits by silhouette and rise rather than by number, which is more descriptive than Levi's numbering but requires reading the detail.

The variables that matter are rise (where the waistband sits), leg shape (skinny, straight, wide, bootcut) and inseam length, which is specified rather than assumed.

Rise is the one people get wrong. A high rise on a short torso can sit uncomfortably at the ribs; a low rise on a long torso gapes at the back. Matching rise to your proportions matters more than the leg shape, which is largely a style preference.

Fabric changes the size you need

Madewell sells both rigid and stretch denim, and the same labelled size fits differently in each.

Rigid denim has minimal give: it fits as it fits and stretches perhaps half a size with wear. Stretch blends are comfortable immediately and will bag out at the knee over a day, then recover on washing.

Between sizes: size down in stretch, size up in rigid. That rule resolves most fit complaints.

The denim recycling programme

Madewell accepts old jeans of any brand for recycling and gives a discount on a new pair in return.

This is a genuine and underused saving — the old jeans go to be recycled into housing insulation, and the discount is meaningful rather than token. If you have worn-out denim in a cupboard, it is worth more as a trade-in than as landfill.

Check the current terms before relying on it, since the discount amount and conditions change periodically.

Beyond denim

The wider clothing range is competent mid-price casualwear. The leather goods — bags and belts — are the other genuine strength, using real leather that ages well rather than coated synthetics.

The knitwear and t-shirts compete in a crowded field at that price. Nothing wrong with them, and not the reason to shop here.

Denim care

Wash cold, inside out, and hang dry. Heat shrinks cotton and destroys elastane, and a hot dryer is why jeans stop fitting after a few months.

Wash less often than you think. Spot-clean and air between wears — this preserves both colour and fit, and for raw denim it develops the fade patterns that are the appeal.

Zip the fly and fasten the button before washing to stop the hardware snagging other garments.

Curvy, petite and tall lengths

Many Madewell jeans come in more than the standard cut. The curvy versions add room through the hip and thigh relative to the waist, which fixes the gap at the back of the waistband that plenty of people accept as normal.

Petite and tall lengths change the inseam, and on petite styles the rise is often adjusted too. If you are short in the torso as well as the leg, a Madewell petite often fits better than hemming a regular pair.

Not every wash is made in every length, so if the exact colour matters, check the Madewell size options before falling for it.

Madewell Insider

Madewell runs a free membership programme, Madewell Insider, that earns points on purchases and gives members early access and member-only offers. Joining costs nothing, so sign in before checkout rather than after.

The value builds over repeat purchases. Check the current Madewell Insider terms for how points convert into rewards and whether they expire, because the details are revised from time to time.

Buying Madewell second-hand

Madewell denim holds up well enough to be worth buying used, and the brand has run its own resale programme alongside the trade-in scheme. Check what is currently offered.

On resale sites, search by the Madewell fit name and check the measurements laid flat, not only the size tag. Denim that has been worn and washed can differ from the label, particularly in stretch fabrics.

Look for wear at the inner thigh and the back pockets in listing photos. Those are where jeans fail, and a pair thinning there has little life left.

Where the Madewell savings are

Madewell discounts frequently, with regular percentage events and periodic extra reductions on already-marked-down stock:

MADEWELLEXTRAEXTRA — 30% offSHOW COUPON CODE
MADEWELLLONGWKND — 30% offSHOW COUPON CODE
MADEWELLMWAPP — 15% offSHOW COUPON CODE

Because the core denim fits carry over between seasons, a discontinued wash is the same jean in a different colour — and on denim, arguably the point. Clearance on washes is straightforwardly good value.

Codes generally do not stack on sale prices, so compare the sale price against full price with a code rather than expecting both.

Common questions

Which fit should I start with?

Pick the rise for your torso first, then the leg shape for your preference. Rise matters more for comfort.

Is the recycling discount worth it?

Yes, and it costs you nothing but the trip. Old jeans of any brand are accepted.

Do they run small?

They run close to true, with the variation coming from rigid versus stretch fabric rather than the labelling.
