Sabre Pepper Spray: Legality, Spray Patterns, Expiry and Practice

Sabre makes pepper spray and other personal safety products, and it is one of the most widely sold brands in the US. A Sabre spray is only useful if it is legal where you carry it, suits where you will use it, is in date, and you can deploy it under stress. This guide covers those four things.

Check the law first

Pepper spray is legal to carry in all US states, but the rules differ. Some states limit canister size, some restrict formulas or who may buy, and some limit shipping — Sabre cannot ship certain products to certain states.

Check your state and city rules before ordering from Sabre. Also check anywhere you regularly go: workplaces, campuses, courthouses and air travel all have their own rules. Pepper spray is not allowed in aircraft cabins.

If you travel abroad, assume it is illegal until confirmed otherwise. Many countries treat pepper spray as a weapon.

Stream, gel or fog

Sabre sells several spray patterns, and the right one depends on where you expect to use it.

Stream reaches further and is less affected by wind. It needs reasonable aim at the face.

Gel is a sticky stream that clings and is least likely to blow back onto you. It is a strong choice outdoors and in wind, and easier to use indoors without filling the room.

Fog or cone covers a wider area and needs less aim, but has shorter range and blows back more easily. Poor for windy conditions or confined spaces.

Many Sabre formulas also contain a UV marking dye, which can help police identify an attacker later. Check the formula description on the specific Sabre product.

For most people carrying a Sabre spray for walking, running or commuting, a stream or gel is the practical choice.

Carrying format

A spray at the bottom of a bag is useless in the seconds it matters. Choose how you carry it before you choose the Sabre model.

Keychain units ride on your keys, so they are in your hand when you walk to the car or front door.

Hand-held runner models strap to the hand and suit joggers.

Belt-clip and larger canisters hold more spray and reach further, at the cost of bulk.

Whatever you choose, the safety or flip-top must be operable one-handed without looking.

Expiry and replacement

Pepper spray loses pressure over time. Every Sabre canister has an expiry date printed on it; replace it by then.

Heat and cold both affect canisters. A spray left in a car through summer should be replaced sooner.

After any use, even a brief test, replace it. A partly used canister may not have the pressure you are relying on.

Practise with an inert trainer

Sabre sells inert practice sprays that contain no pepper. Using one is the single most useful thing you can do.

Practise drawing, removing the safety and spraying at a target at a few metres. Most people discover their first attempt is slower and less accurate than they assumed.

After spraying, the plan is to move away and get help, not to stay.

Beyond pepper spray

Sabre sells more than sprays. The range includes personal alarms, home security devices and bear spray for hikers, and each does a different job.

Personal alarms make a loud noise when a pin is pulled or a button pressed. They are simple to carry and suit people who cannot or prefer not to carry spray, including where pepper spray is restricted.

Bear spray is a separate product, designed and registered for use on animals. Do not carry it as a personal defence spray, and do not take a personal Sabre spray into bear country as a substitute.

Home security items such as Sabre door and window alarms are cheap and easy to fit. They add warning, not protection, so treat them as one layer.

Most Sabre codes sit at 20%, so any working 20% code is as good as another.

A Sabre bundle of a live spray and an inert trainer is better value than the live spray alone, and the trainer is what makes the spray useful.

The College15 code is aimed at students, so expect Sabre to check eligibility. For everyone else, a 20% code is the one to try first.

Check that the Sabre product ships to your state before applying a code, since restricted items can be removed at checkout.

Common questions

Is Sabre pepper spray legal where I live?

It is legal in all US states, but size, formula and shipping rules vary. Check your state and city rules.

Does pepper spray expire?

Yes. Every Sabre canister carries a date; replace it by then, or sooner if it has been kept in a hot car.

Stream or gel?

Gel resists wind and blowback best. Stream reaches furthest. Both suit most people better than fog.

Is a Sabre alarm a good alternative?

Where spray is restricted or unwanted, yes. A Sabre personal alarm draws attention and needs no aim.
