AllTrails: Free vs Plus vs Peak, Offline Maps and Where to Subscribe

AllTrails is a trail-finding app and website with a large library of hiking, running and biking routes, each with maps, photos and reviews from other users. The basic version is free; the paid tiers add the features that matter once you are out on the trail.

Buying AllTrails well means knowing which tier you need, understanding offline maps, and subscribing in the place where discount codes actually work.

What the free version does

Free AllTrails lets you search trails, read reviews, see photos, and view the route on a map. It is enough for choosing a hike from home.

What the free version does not give you is reliable navigation once you lose signal. That gap is the main reason to pay.

AllTrails Plus

AllTrails Plus is the main paid tier. The headline feature is offline maps: download a trail and the map works with no phone signal, with your GPS position shown on it.

Plus has also included wrong-turn alerts, which warn you if you leave the route, and live sharing of your location with a trusted contact, plus an ad-free experience and extra map layers. Check the current AllTrails feature list, as it changes.

For anyone hiking outside cities, offline maps alone justify AllTrails Plus.

AllTrails Peak

AllTrails Peak is a higher tier added above Plus. It builds on Plus with more advanced tools, including features for planning custom routes and more detailed trail information.

Peak costs more. It suits frequent hikers who plan their own routes; most casual walkers will not use the extra features. Start with Plus and upgrade if you find you want them.

Choosing a trail on AllTrails

Every AllTrails listing shows distance, elevation gain, route type and a difficulty rating. Elevation gain is the number that surprises people. A short trail with a lot of climbing can be harder than a long flat one.

Route type matters for planning. A loop brings you back to the car without retracing steps, an out-and-back returns the same way, and a point-to-point route needs transport at the far end.

AllTrails difficulty ratings are relative to other trails nearby, not an absolute scale. Use the estimated time and the reviews to judge whether a trail suits your fitness.

AllTrails filters let you narrow results by length, difficulty and whether dogs or children are suitable. Set them before browsing to save time.

Using AllTrails offline maps properly

Download the map before you leave home, on Wi-Fi. It does not help if you remember at the trailhead with no signal.

Keep the phone charged. GPS and a bright screen drain batteries, especially in cold weather. Carry a small power bank on longer hikes.

Read recent AllTrails reviews for trail conditions. A review from last week about a washed-out bridge is more useful than a glowing one from three years ago.

AllTrails is a planning and navigation aid, not a replacement for checking official conditions, weather and closures with the park or land manager.

Where to subscribe, and why it matters

You can subscribe to AllTrails inside the iPhone or Android app, or on the AllTrails website.

Subscriptions bought through Apple's App Store or Google Play are billed by those stores, and discount codes generally cannot be applied there. To use an AllTrails code, subscribe on the website, then sign in to the app with the same account.

The same applies to cancelling. An app store subscription is cancelled in your phone's subscription settings; a web subscription is managed on your AllTrails account.

Free trials and renewals

AllTrails has typically offered a free trial of its paid tier. The trial usually converts to a paid annual plan automatically.

Put the trial end date in your calendar. If you decide AllTrails Plus is not for you, cancel before it renews.

Annual billing is usually far cheaper per month than monthly billing, where monthly is offered.

Where the AllTrails savings are

ALLTRAILSExploreandhike30 — 30% offSHOW COUPON CODE
ALLTRAILSFamilytrailtime30 — 30% offSHOW COUPON CODE
ALLTRAILSSAVENOW — 20% offSHOW COUPON CODE

The 30% AllTrails codes are creator codes from hiking accounts, and they are the deepest discounts available here. Try one first. If it is refused, try the second; creator codes are sometimes limited to new subscribers or expire.

SAVENOW at 20% is the fallback if neither 30% code works for your account.

Apply codes on the AllTrails website, at checkout for an annual plan. They will not work in an app store purchase.

A code usually applies to the first year only. Check the renewal price before you pay, so the second year is no surprise.

Common questions

Is AllTrails Plus worth it?

If you hike anywhere with patchy signal, yes. Offline maps and wrong-turn alerts are the features worth paying for.

Why won't my AllTrails code work in the app?

App store purchases generally cannot take codes. Subscribe on the AllTrails website instead.

Do AllTrails offline maps work with no signal?

Yes, once downloaded. Your phone's GPS shows your position on the saved map.

What is the difference between AllTrails Plus and Peak?

Peak sits above Plus with more advanced planning tools. Most hikers are well served by Plus.
