American Greetings is one of the oldest names in greeting cards. Online, americangreetings.com centres on ecards: animated and personalised cards sent by email or text, plus cards you can print at home.
Almost everything on the site runs through an American Greetings membership. The choices that matter are which plan to take, how the free trial ends, and whether you want ecards or printables.
How American Greetings membership works
An American Greetings membership unlocks the full ecard library, allowing unlimited sends during the membership period. There is typically a monthly and an annual plan.
The annual plan usually works out cheaper per month. It suits someone who sends cards for birthdays, anniversaries and holidays across the year.
The monthly plan suits a short burst, such as the holiday season or a wedding. Cancel afterwards if you will not use it again.
Plan names and prices change. Check the current American Greetings membership page for what each tier includes.
Free trials and auto-renewal
American Greetings often offers a free trial of the membership. It usually requires payment details and converts to a paid plan automatically if you do not cancel.
Note the trial end date the day you sign up. Set a reminder a couple of days before it.
Cancel in your American Greetings account settings. Check you receive a confirmation, and keep it.
Annual plans also renew automatically. If you only sent a handful of cards last year, switch to monthly or cancel before the renewal date.
Ecards: personalising and scheduling
Most American Greetings ecards let you add a personal message, and some let you add photos or change the recipient's name inside the animation.
Schedule ecards ahead. You can write a birthday card now and set it to arrive on the day, which is the best way to use an American Greetings membership.
Check the recipient's email address carefully. An ecard can land in spam or promotions. Tell the recipient to look there, or send it by text if that option is offered.
American Greetings typically lets you see when a card has been opened, useful when you are not sure it arrived.
Printable cards
American Greetings printable cards are designed to print at home and fold. Use heavier card stock, not ordinary copy paper, for a card that feels like a real one.
Print a test page on plain paper first to check alignment and folding. Home printers vary, and margins sometimes cut a border.
Check which printables are included in your American Greetings membership and which need a separate purchase.
Seasonal extras
American Greetings has offered interactive seasonal content, such as advent calendars with daily animations. Some seasonal items are included with membership and some are sold separately.
Holiday demand is highest in November and December, so the best American Greetings offers on membership often appear before then.
Choosing ecards or physical cards
An American Greetings ecard is instant, cheap per card and good for distant friends. A physical card lasts and suits sympathy, weddings and older relatives who prefer post.
The americangreetings.com membership does not typically post paper cards for you. American Greetings paper cards are sold through supermarkets, pharmacies and card shops, so treat the site and the shelf as two separate purchases.
Many people use both: an ecard membership for everyday occasions, and a paper card for the big ones.
Reminders, address book and SmashUps
An American Greetings membership includes more than the card library. The reminder service lets you store birthdays and anniversaries and emails you before each one, which is where most of the value sits for a forgetful sender.
Fill in the address book when you join. Once names, emails and dates are stored, sending an American Greetings card takes a minute rather than a search through your phone.
SmashUps are American Greetings' video ecards: short clips featuring characters or personalities that address the recipient by name. They suit children and anyone who likes a joke; a sympathy card should be a quieter design.
Creatacard is the tool for building your own card from templates, photos and text. It is the option to use when nothing in the American Greetings library fits the occasion exactly.
Features move between plans over time. Check the current American Greetings plan comparison to confirm which of these your tier includes.
Where the American Greetings savings are
American Greetings codes mostly apply to membership:
The 50% code is strongest on an annual American Greetings membership, where half off applies to a full year. Check whether it covers the first term only.
The free monthly membership code suits trying American Greetings before committing. Treat it like a free trial: note the date it converts to paid.
The free gift code is worth adding when it matches something you would use. Check what the gift is before choosing it over a discount.
Codes like these are usually for new members and single-use. Check the terms, and expect one code per American Greetings account.
