Aprilaire makes whole-home air products that sit in the ductwork: air cleaners, humidifiers, dehumidifiers and the filters and water panels that keep them working. The equipment is usually installed by an HVAC contractor, but the consumables are bought direct from Aprilaire by the homeowner, and that is where mistakes happen. The wrong filter number will not fit; the wrong MERV rating can strain a furnace. This guide is about getting the part right.
Find your model number first
Every Aprilaire air cleaner and humidifier has a model number on a label on the unit, usually on the door or the side of the cabinet. Write it down before you shop. The Aprilaire site lets you filter replacement parts by model, and that is the only reliable way to match a filter.
If the label is gone, the size of the old filter — printed on its frame — will narrow it down. Measure the old filter if even that is missing.
Filter numbers and MERV ratings
Aprilaire filters carry a three-digit number that ties to a cabinet size and a filtration level. The number on your old filter is the one to reorder, unless you deliberately change rating.
MERV 11 catches dust, pollen and pet dander and is the everyday choice. MERV 13 adds finer particles, including much of what smoke and some bacteria travel on, and is the common recommendation for allergy households. MERV 16 is the top Aprilaire rating, close to hospital-grade filtration.
Higher MERV means more resistance to airflow. Aprilaire cabinets are designed for their own filters at each rating, but if your system already struggles for airflow, ask your HVAC contractor before jumping to MERV 16.
Aprilaire filters are typically four inches deep, which is why they last far longer than a one-inch hardware-store filter. Do not try to substitute a thin filter into an Aprilaire cabinet.
Humidifiers and water panels
Aprilaire humidifiers come in bypass, fan-powered and steam types. Bypass units use the furnace blower, fan-powered ones have their own fan and suit larger homes, and steam units work independently of the furnace and cover the biggest spaces.
Bypass and fan-powered Aprilaire humidifiers use a replaceable water panel — the evaporative pad that the water runs over. Water panels are numbered too, and each humidifier model takes one specific panel. Check the model before ordering.
Steam humidifiers use a canister rather than a panel, replaced on a different schedule.
When to replace filters and panels
Aprilaire gives a replacement interval per product, but real life differs. A filter in a house with pets, smokers or renovation dust clogs faster. A visual check every few months — hold it up to a light — is a better guide than the calendar.
Water panels are replaced at least once a heating season, and mid-season in hard-water areas where mineral scale builds up quickly. A scaled panel humidifies poorly and can smell.
Buy consumables in multipacks from Aprilaire. Per-unit prices drop and you are not caught without a filter in January.
Dehumidifiers, thermostats and air purifiers
Aprilaire whole-home dehumidifiers are sized by pints per day and are installed in the ductwork or a crawl space. Sizing depends on the home's square footage and climate; Aprilaire publishes guidance, and an installer should confirm before you buy.
Aprilaire thermostats and controls manage humidity as well as temperature; check that a control is compatible with your specific humidifier model, because the wiring differs between generations.
Aprilaire also sells room air purifiers that need no installation, with their own filter numbers. Do not confuse those filters with the whole-home cabinet filters.
Shipping, returns and warranty
Consumables from Aprilaire ship in the US; check the free-shipping threshold, which multipacks often clear. Installed equipment is usually bought through a contractor rather than the website.
Opened filters and water panels are rarely returnable, which is another reason to confirm the model number first. Registering an Aprilaire unit can extend the warranty; check the current terms.
Where the Aprilaire savings are
The 25% Aprilaire code is the strongest on a consumables order — a multipack of MERV 13 filters and two water panels adds up, and a quarter off that is a real figure.
The $50 code is aimed at bigger-ticket items, typically an air purifier or a dehumidifier, and usually carries a minimum. Work out the break-even: $50 beats 25% on anything under $200, and the percentage wins above it.
The 20% code is the fallback if the 25% one has expired. Aprilaire codes are seasonal — many are named after holidays — so try the newest first.
One code per order at Aprilaire. Combine the discount with a multipack rather than trying to stack codes.
Common questions
Which Aprilaire filter do I need?
The number printed on your old filter, or the one the Aprilaire site lists for your model number. Never guess from size alone.
Is MERV 16 better than MERV 13?
It filters finer particles, but it adds airflow resistance. Ask your HVAC contractor before moving up if your system is marginal.
How often do I change an Aprilaire water panel?
At least once per heating season, sooner with hard water. Check it mid-winter for scale.
Can I return an opened Aprilaire filter?
Usually not. Confirm your model number before ordering.
