discovery+: Ad-Lite vs Ad-Free, Devices, Trials and What the Library Covers

discovery+ is the streaming service for Warner Bros. Discovery's factual and lifestyle television. It carries shows from networks such as HGTV, Food Network, TLC, Investigation Discovery, Discovery Channel and Animal Planet, along with discovery+ originals. You subscribe at discoveryplus.com or through an app store, and watch on the web, phones, tablets, smart TVs and streaming sticks.

Getting good value from discovery+ comes down to choosing the right plan, checking that your devices are supported, and using a trial or promo code without being caught by an automatic renewal.

Ad-Lite or Ad-Free

discovery+ has offered two main tiers: a cheaper plan with limited ads and a pricier ad-free plan. Prices change, so read the current figures on the discovery+ plans page.

The ad-supported tier suits casual viewers who dip into a few episodes a week. If you binge long reality or true-crime series, the ads add up across a season and the ad-free plan feels different. Note that some content may still carry short promos on the ad-free plan, and that downloads for offline viewing have typically been an ad-free feature.

What the discovery+ library covers

discovery+ is strongest on unscripted television: home renovation, cooking, property, true crime, travel, nature and reality franchises such as 90 Day Fiancé. It does not carry scripted drama and blockbuster films in the way a general streamer does.

Much discovery+ content also appears on Warner Bros. Discovery's broader service, Max, and bundle arrangements have shifted over time. If you already pay for Max or a bundle, check whether the shows you want are already included before adding discovery+.

Live TV is not the point of discovery+. It is on-demand, with new episodes often landing soon after broadcast. Availability also varies by country, so check the service in your region.

Devices and profiles

The discovery+ app runs on major platforms including iOS, Android, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, many smart TVs and games consoles. Check the supported-devices list for older TVs before subscribing.

A discovery+ account supports multiple profiles and a limit on simultaneous streams. Kids' profiles help keep true crime off a child's home screen.

Streaming quality depends on your connection and device. If discovery+ looks soft on a large TV, check the app's playback settings and your broadband speed before blaming the plan, and confirm on the plans page what resolution each tier supports.

Before paying, browse the discovery+ catalogue on the website. You can see which seasons of a show are available, and older seasons of long-running series are sometimes missing.

Billing, trials and renewals

discovery+ subscriptions renew automatically each month or year until cancelled. A free trial or discounted first month converts to the full price at the end of the period, so note the date when you sign up.

How you subscribe matters. If you sign up through Apple, Google, Roku or Amazon, billing and cancellation run through that platform, and discovery+ promo codes usually cannot be applied. Codes are generally redeemed on discoveryplus.com with a direct subscription.

Some mobile and broadband providers have bundled discovery+ in the past. If you get it through a partner, the partner controls pricing and codes will not apply.

When to subscribe and when to pause

discovery+ is an easy service to rotate. Subscribe for a new season of a favourite show, watch it, then cancel before the next billing date. Your profile and watch history usually remain if you return.

An annual plan, where offered, costs less per month but only makes sense if you watch all year. Most casual viewers of discovery+ save more by subscribing month to month in bursts.

Where the discovery+ savings are

DISCOVERY PLUSWELLDONE30 — extended 30-day trialSHOW COUPON CODE
DISCOVERY PLUSMACYS25 — $1 for a monthSHOW COUPON CODE
DISCOVERY PLUSSUMMER — 15% offSHOW COUPON CODE

The extended trial code is the best start for a new discovery+ subscriber: 30 days is enough to finish a season and decide. Set a reminder a few days before it ends.

The $1-for-a-month code is a partner offer and may be limited to specific plans or new accounts. If it works, it is nearly as good as a trial.

The 15% code is the one for someone who has already used a trial. It lowers the monthly price, but check whether it applies for one billing period or several.

discovery+ codes are generally for new or returning subscribers signing up directly on the website, one per account. They cannot be used on subscriptions billed through app stores or partners.

Common questions

Is discovery+ the same as Max?

No. Both belong to Warner Bros. Discovery and share much factual content, but they are separate subscriptions. Check which shows each carries.

Can I use a discovery+ code on an app store subscription?

Usually not. Subscribe directly on discoveryplus.com to redeem a code.

Can I download discovery+ shows?

Downloads have typically been available on the ad-free plan in the mobile app. Check the current plan details.

Can I cancel discovery+ any time?

Yes. Access runs to the end of the paid period. Cancel through the platform that bills you.
