Nalgene: Bottle Materials, Mouth Size and Cleaning

Nalgene makes hard-wearing plastic bottles. The decisions are material, mouth size and — the one people actually struggle with — keeping them clean.

Materials

Tritan is the clear, rigid material most Nalgene bottles use. It is tough, dishwasher safe, holds very little flavour and is BPA-free.

HDPE is the softer, opaque material. Lighter, more flexible, slightly more prone to holding odours, and considerably cheaper.

Both are sturdy enough to survive being dropped, which is the brand's whole reputation.

Neither is insulated. A Nalgene will not keep a drink cold or hot — for that you need a vacuum-insulated bottle, which is a different product.

Do not put boiling water in a plastic bottle, and do not leave one in direct sun in a hot car for long periods. Heat is hard on plastics generally.

Wide mouth or narrow

This is the decision that affects daily use most.

Wide mouth takes ice cubes, is far easier to clean with a brush, and takes powder supplements without a funnel. It also splashes when you drink while moving.

Narrow mouth is easier to drink from without spilling and much harder to clean properly.

If you want ice in it, you need the wide mouth. Standard cubes will not go through a narrow one.

Wide-mouth bottles take a lid attachment that narrows the opening, which is the best of both if the accessory exists for your model.

Check the lid tether. A lid that stays attached does not get lost, and a lost lid usually ends the bottle.

Why bottles smell, and what to do

Almost always the lid and its gasket rather than the bottle body.

Residue collects under the seal and stays wet. Take the gasket out where it comes out, and wash it and its groove separately. That fixes most cases.

Rinse immediately after anything other than water. Sports drinks, juice and protein set hard and are far harder to remove once dried.

Dry with the lid off and the bottle upside down. A capped damp bottle grows exactly what you would expect.

For established odour, soak with bicarbonate of soda and warm water, or diluted white vinegar. Both work and neither damages the plastic.

Do not use bleach in a drinks bottle, and never mix cleaning products.

Use a bottle brush that reaches the base. A sponge does not clean the bottom corners where residue collects.

Practical points

Check dishwasher compatibility for the lid as well as the bottle. Many lids are top-rack only, and dishwasher heat warps threads, which is what stops a lid sealing.

Do not freeze a full bottle. Liquid expands and can split a seam or deform the neck.

Replace a bottle if it develops a crack or a deep scratch inside — scratches harbour bacteria and cannot be cleaned out properly.

Carry loops and clips are the part that breaks on any bottle. Check whether replacements are sold separately.

Nalgene sizes and bottle types

The classic Nalgene is the 32 oz wide mouth bottle, roughly a litre, and it is the one most accessories and replacement lids are made for. Smaller and larger Nalgene sizes exist too, so check the current range.

Size is a trade-off between refills and weight. A full 32 oz Nalgene carries about a kilogram of water, which matters on a long walk more than on a desk.

The graduations on the side of a Nalgene bottle are useful for measuring water for dehydrated meals or tracking how much you have drunk in a day.

Keep artwork simple. Fine lines and small text print less clearly on a curved Nalgene bottle than they look on a screen preview.
