New Balance does something almost no other mainstream trainer brand bothers with: it sells shoes in multiple widths. That is the single most useful thing about the brand, and a great many buyers never use it.
Width fittings are the point
Most New Balance models come in several widths — typically narrow, standard, wide and extra wide, marked with letter codes.
If trainers normally feel tight across the ball of your foot while the length is right, you do not need a bigger size. You need a wider fitting. Sizing up to fix a width problem gives a shoe that is too long, so your foot slides forward and your heel lifts — which is how people end up with black toenails after a long walk.
The reverse applies too: a narrow fitting solves heel slip far better than a smaller size, which just cramps your toes.
Measure your foot width once, learn your fitting, and buy by it permanently. It is more useful than any discount.
What the model numbers indicate
New Balance numbering is not fully systematic, but it is still informative.
Broadly, higher numbers within a series indicate newer or more premium models. The 990 series is the flagship lifestyle-and-comfort line, made in the USA and priced accordingly. The 57/40 and 550 are lifestyle models. The performance running lines — Fresh Foam and FuelCell — are named rather than numbered, and that naming tells you the cushioning technology.
Fresh Foam prioritises soft, stable cushioning for everyday running. FuelCell is the responsive, propulsive foam aimed at faster running. Buying the wrong one is the common error: FuelCell feels harsh for easy miles, Fresh Foam feels dull for speed work.
Why Made in USA and UK models cost more
Part of the range is manufactured in the USA and UK and carries a substantially higher price. The construction and materials are genuinely different — better leathers and suedes, more hand-finishing — and the shoes last longer.
Whether that is worth double the price depends on whether you want a shoe for a decade or a shoe for two years. For the 990 series specifically, the made-in versions are the ones with the reputation.
The standard-production versions of similar-looking models are perfectly good shoes; they are just not the same shoes.
When to replace running shoes
Look at the midsole rather than the tread. Compression lines along the foam, or a shoe that suddenly feels harsh on hard ground, means the cushioning is finished even if the outsole looks fine.
Rotating two pairs extends both meaningfully, because foam recovers between runs. That is not marketing — it is how the material behaves.
Men's and women's New Balance width letters differ
New Balance width letters are not the same across men's and women's shoes. In men's sizing, D is standard, 2E is wide and 4E is extra wide. In women's, B is standard and D is wide.
So a D in a women's New Balance is a wide shoe, while a D in a men's is the standard width. People ordering across the two ranges get caught by this constantly.
Not every New Balance model or colour comes in every width. Filter by width first, then choose from what is left.
Length can also shift slightly between New Balance lasts, especially between retro lifestyle models and current running shoes. If you are between sizes, read the reviews on that specific model.
Running, walking and trail
New Balance makes dedicated walking shoes as well as running shoes, and the walking ranges often come in the widest fittings. For all-day standing or walking with a wide foot, look there before a running model.
Trail versions of New Balance running shoes add a grippier outsole and a tougher upper. On pavement the lugs wear down quickly, so buy trail shoes for trails.
Stability models add support for runners whose feet roll inward heavily. If you do not know whether you need one, a neutral New Balance shoe is the usual starting point.
Where the New Balance savings are
New Balance discounts regularly, with a mix of percentage and flat-amount codes:
On a single pair around $100, a flat $15 is worth roughly the same as 15%; above that the percentage wins. Worth checking which you have before building a basket.
The outlet and clearance sections carry previous-season colourways at deeper reductions, and since the underlying shoe rarely changes between colour updates, that is a genuine like-for-like saving.
MEMBERBDAY is, as its name suggests, likely tied to the myNB membership, so expect to need a New Balance account for it.
Common questions
Which width am I?
If standard-width trainers feel tight across the ball of your foot, try wide before trying a bigger size.
Fresh Foam or FuelCell?
Fresh Foam for everyday and easy miles, FuelCell for faster running. Most people want Fresh Foam.
Are the Made in USA models worth it?
For longevity and materials, genuinely yes. For pure function, the standard versions do the job.
Is a women's D the same as a men's D?
No. In New Balance women's sizing D is wide; in men's sizing D is standard.
