Orbitz is an online travel agency owned by Expedia Group. It sells flights, hotels, holiday rentals, car hire, cruises and packages, and it runs its own loyalty scheme, Orbitz Rewards, paid out in Orbucks.
A good Orbitz booking comes down to reading the rate rules, knowing which parts of a trip earn Orbucks, and applying the right code to the right product.
How Orbitz Rewards and Orbucks work
Orbitz Rewards is free to join. Members earn Orbucks on eligible bookings, and Orbucks are spent like dollars on future Orbitz hotels and other eligible travel.
Earning rates differ by product. Hotels have typically earned far more Orbucks than flights, and some Orbitz hotels are flagged with bonus earning. Check the Orbucks figure shown next to each option before choosing.
Orbitz Rewards has status tiers based on qualifying bookings in a year, with higher tiers earning more. Signing in also shows member prices on many Orbitz hotels, so always search logged in.
Orbucks can expire after a period without account activity. Spend them rather than hoarding.
Reading an Orbitz hotel rate
The same Orbitz room often appears at several prices. The differences are in the rules, not the room.
Non-refundable rates are cheapest, but you lose the money if plans change.
Fully refundable rates cost more and allow free cancellation until a stated deadline, often a day or two before arrival.
Pay now or pay later — some Orbitz hotels let you pay at the property. Paying later keeps cash in hand; paying now is usually where promo codes apply.
Read the cancellation deadline in the hotel's local time, not your own. Save the Orbitz itinerary number and the hotel's own confirmation number in case the property cannot find your booking.
Resort fees, taxes and the real Orbitz total
The headline Orbitz price may not include everything. Resort fees, destination fees and some local taxes can be charged by the property on arrival.
Before comparing hotels, open the Orbitz price breakdown and look for anything marked as due at the property. A cheaper room with a large resort fee can cost more than the hotel next door. Parking is rarely included and matters in cities and beach resorts.
Booking flights on Orbitz
Orbitz shows many airlines' fares side by side, including basic economy. Basic fares often exclude seat selection, changes and sometimes a full-size carry-on bag. Add those costs before choosing the cheapest line.
Once you book a flight through Orbitz, changes follow the airline's fare rules. Some changes must go through Orbitz, others through the airline, so keep both confirmation numbers.
Separate one-way tickets on different airlines are not protected as a connection. If the first flight is late and you miss the second, the second airline has no obligation to help.
When an Orbitz package beats booking separately
Orbitz bundles flights and hotels, and sometimes a car, into packages. Package pricing can undercut the same pieces bought one by one, because some hotels release lower rates that only appear when bundled.
Price it both ways. Search the Orbitz package, then the flight and hotel separately, and compare totals including fees. Packages often have stricter change rules, and changing one part can reprice the whole trip.
Car hire and cruises
Orbitz car hire compares rental firms side by side. The low daily rate rarely includes insurance, young-driver charges or airport fees, so read the rental terms before paying. Check whether your credit card already covers collision damage.
Orbitz cruise prices are per person and usually exclude port fees, gratuities and drinks. Compare cabins on the full total for everyone travelling.
Where the Orbitz savings are
These Orbitz codes cover a general hotel stay, an app booking and one destination:
Orbitz coupon codes almost always apply to hotels rather than flights, and usually to prepaid rates at participating properties. If the code field refuses one, check whether you picked a pay-later rate.
SAVENOW is the first to try on any eligible Orbitz hotel. APP15 is the same size but, going by its name, likely works only when you book in the Orbitz app.
The Orlando code is destination-specific. It is worth trying for Orlando stays; elsewhere it will probably be rejected.
Many Orbitz codes carry a maximum discount and a minimum spend. On a long stay a capped 15% may be worth less than you expect, so check the saving on the payment page, and check the Orbucks figure after the code is applied. Combining a code with Orbitz member prices is where the lowest totals appear.
Common questions
Are Orbucks the same as Expedia points?
No. Although Orbitz is part of Expedia Group, Orbucks are Orbitz's own currency and are spent on Orbitz.
Can I use an Orbitz code on flights?
Rarely. Most Orbitz codes are for hotels. Read each code's terms.
Why is the Orbitz price higher at checkout?
Taxes and fees are often added after the search results. Compare totals, not nightly rates.
Should I book a refundable Orbitz rate?
If plans might change, yes. The extra is usually cheaper than losing a non-refundable night.
