Vital Care Core versus Vital Care Premier
Vital Care Core is the entry tier. It is aimed at owners who shop and groom at Petco regularly, with member discounts on services, rewards and shipping perks. Check the current Petco Vital Care page for the exact list, as it has changed over time.
Vital Care Premier adds veterinary care, such as routine exams and some vaccinations, at participating Petco vet hospitals. The price usually depends on your pet and your location.
Premier only makes sense if a Petco vet hospital is convenient and you are happy for it to be your pet's regular vet. If you already have a vet you trust elsewhere, Core is the tier to consider.
Working out whether Petco Vital Care pays

Add up a year of what you actually buy at Petco: grooming appointments, food, litter, treats and flea treatment. Then apply the Petco Vital Care discounts to each line and compare the saving with the membership fee.
A dog groomed every six weeks at Petco usually gets there faster than a cat owner who buys litter twice a year. Grooming is the line that makes or breaks the maths for most members.
For Premier, list the vet visits your pet needs in a normal year and price them at your current vet. Include vaccinations and a yearly check-up. If that total is well under the Premier fee, the plan is insurance you may not need.
Petco Vital Care is not pet insurance. It does not cover accidents or major illness, so do not drop insurance on the strength of a membership.
Repeat Delivery
Repeat Delivery is Petco's autoship. You choose products and an interval, and Petco sends them on schedule, often with a discount on the first order and a smaller ongoing one.
It works for anything bought on a steady cycle: food, litter, puppy pads and monthly preventatives. Set the interval from how long a bag really lasts, and change it once you see the first delivery or two.
Repeat Delivery orders can usually be skipped, moved or cancelled from your Petco account. Check the next shipment date before a price rise or a holiday.
Grooming and vet services at your local Petco
Not every Petco store has a grooming salon, and fewer have a full vet hospital. Check the services at your nearest Petco before paying for benefits you cannot use.
Book grooming ahead, especially before holidays. Tell the salon about matting, skin conditions or anxiety at booking, since these change the time needed and sometimes the price.
Petco vet hospitals and Vetco vaccination clinics are different services. A clinic handles shots and basic preventatives. A hospital handles exams, diagnostics and treatment.
Choosing food and supplies at Petco
Petco sells major brands alongside its own labels, including WholeHearted food, Reddy gear, Leaps & Bounds toys and So Phresh litter. Petco's own brands are often cheaper per pound, so compare unit prices.
Match food to life stage and size, and switch gradually over a week or so. For prescription diets and medication, Petco needs your vet's authorisation, so allow extra time before the old supply runs out.
Renewal and cancelling
Petco Vital Care renews automatically. Note the renewal date and the billing basis when you join, whether monthly or annual.
Premier plans that include vet care may carry a minimum term or different cancellation terms from Core. Read the Petco Vital Care agreement before signing, and ask the hospital how cancelling mid-term works.
