Casper Mattresses: Which Model, and Is the Trial Any Good?

Casper largely created the bed-in-a-box category, and the company that popularised buying a mattress unseen now sells several of them. Picking between the models is the whole decision, because the trial protects you from getting firmness wrong but not from buying more mattress than you need.

Zoned Support is the thing Casper actually does differently

Most foam mattresses are uniformly firm across their surface. Casper's Zoned Support divides the mattress into regions — softer under the shoulders, firmer under the hips and lower back.

The reasoning is straightforward. Your shoulders need to sink in for your spine to stay straight, particularly on your side; your hips are heavier and need resisting or they drop and arch your back. A single firmness has to compromise between those two jobs.

In practice this matters most to side sleepers and to anyone who wakes with lower back stiffness. If you sleep on your front, the benefit is smaller — you want firm throughout.

Zoned support means firmness varies along the mattress rather than across the whole surface.

Which model, without the marketing

Casper's range has been restructured more than once, so check current names, but the tiers are consistent in what they offer.

The entry model is all-foam, medium-firm, and suits most back and combination sleepers. It is the one most people should buy, and the higher tiers are specialisations rather than straightforward upgrades.

The hybrid models add a spring layer. This is the meaningful upgrade for two specific problems: sleeping hot, because springs allow airflow that foam does not, and weak edge support, because springs let you sit on the side without sliding off. If neither is a problem for you, you are paying for weight.

The cooling tier — Casper's Snow technology and equivalents — targets people who genuinely overheat at night. It is the most expensive route and worth it only if heat is your actual complaint rather than a general preference.

Zoned support varies firmness along the mattress: softer at the shoulders, firmer under the hips.

Firmness follows your sleeping position

Side sleepers want softer, so shoulder and hip can sink. Back sleepers want medium-firm. Front sleepers want firmer, because a soft mattress lets the hips drop and arches the lower back — the position most associated with waking in pain.

Body weight shifts all of this: heavier sleepers experience any given mattress as softer, so size up in firmness if you are at the heavier end. Couples with a large weight difference are the strongest case for a hybrid, because springs handle mismatched loads better than foam alone.

The 100-night trial, and what it actually requires

Casper's trial is the reason buying unseen is reasonable, but read the terms rather than assuming.

There is normally a minimum break-in period — around 30 nights — before a return is accepted. This is not a trick. Your body genuinely adapts over a few weeks, and a mattress that feels wrong on night three is frequently fine by week four.

Check whether return collection is free, and whether a mattress protector is required to keep the trial valid. Using one from the first night is far cheaper than discovering it was a condition later.

Your bed base can void the warranty

This catches people after the purchase. Foam and hybrid mattresses need continuous or closely-slatted support. Slats more than a few inches apart let the mattress sag between them, which damages it and commonly voids the warranty.

If you are keeping an existing frame, measure the slat gaps before the mattress arrives. A bunkie board or a sheet of plywood is a cheap fix; finding out six months in is not.

Off-gassing is normal

Compressed foam releases a distinct smell as it expands. Unbox in a ventilated room, let it expand fully before sleeping on it, and open a window. It fades within a few days. If it persists past a week, raise it.

When to buy

Mattress discounting is heavily seasonal and the reductions are large enough that timing matters more than code-hunting:

The long weekends and end-of-year periods are when Casper's deepest reductions land, and they are predictable enough to plan around. If your current mattress is tired rather than unbearable, waiting for one is worth real money.

Bundles adding pillows, sheets or a protector are common and often good value, since you need a protector anyway to keep the trial valid:

Common questions

Can I flip a Casper?

No. They are single-sided, and zoned construction means the layers are oriented head-to-foot. Rotating head-to-foot every few months is the correct maintenance.

How long should it last?

Seven to ten years. The signal to replace is waking stiff, or a visible dip where you sleep — not the age on the label.

What if it is too firm after the trial closes?

A topper softens a mattress cheaply and works well. Firming up a too-soft mattress is much harder, which is an argument for erring firm when genuinely unsure.
