Flickr: Free Account Limits, What Flickr Pro Adds and Picking a Plan Length

Flickr is one of the longest-running photo sharing communities, now owned by SmugMug. Photographers use Flickr to store and show their work, join groups, and find images by others. The only thing you really buy on Flickr is a Flickr Pro subscription, so a good decision here means understanding the limits of the free account, what Pro adds, and which plan length gives the best value.

What a free Flickr account allows

A free Flickr account lets you upload, share and browse, join groups and comment. It has an upload limit on how many photos and videos you can keep, and older free accounts that went over the limit have had content removed in the past. Check the current free limit on the Flickr help pages before relying on it.

If you post a handful of shots a month, the free Flickr account may be all you need. If you want to archive years of work, you will run into the limit quickly.

What Flickr Pro adds

Flickr Pro removes the upload cap and stores photos at full resolution. It also removes ads for you and your visitors, gives detailed statistics on views and sources, and allows longer video uploads.

Pro members have also received partner discounts on editing software, printing and other photography services. The partner list changes, so check the current Flickr Pro perks page to see what is worth claiming.

The Flickr uploader tools can back up photos automatically from a computer or phone. For a photographer who wants one online home for a large archive, that is the main reason to pay.

Flickr as a backup: what to know

Flickr Pro keeps your originals, but treat it as one copy, not the only one. Keep a second backup on a local drive or another service, since any single account can have problems.

Flickr keeps metadata such as camera and lens details, and you can hide it or location data if you prefer. Check your privacy defaults before a bulk upload, especially for family photos, and set albums to private where needed.

If a Flickr Pro subscription lapses, the account returns to free limits. Check the current rules on what happens to photos above the limit, and download anything important before letting Pro expire.

Monthly, yearly or longer

Flickr has offered Pro on a monthly plan, a yearly plan and sometimes a two-year plan. Longer plans usually cost less per month, while the monthly plan lets you try Flickr Pro without a long commitment.

Work out whether you will still use Flickr in a year. If you have already moved your archive there, the longer plan makes sense. If you are testing it, pay monthly first, and apply a code to the longer plan once you are sure.

Pro renews automatically. Note the renewal date and price, since an introductory discount may apply only to the first term.

Licensing and community

Flickr lets you choose a licence for each photo, including all rights reserved and several Creative Commons options. Pick deliberately, since a Creative Commons licence allows others to reuse your Flickr images under its terms.

Groups are the heart of the Flickr community. Joining active groups in your subject area is the best way to get feedback and views; the paid tier does not change that, though stats help you see what works.

Flickr also lets you set who can download your photos and whether a Flickr search can surface them. If you sell prints or licence work elsewhere, turn off downloads and add a watermark before upload, since the platform does not protect images once they are copied.

Where the Flickr savings are

FLICKRMFY25 — 25% offSHOW COUPON CODE
FLICKR22FOR22 — 22% offSHOW COUPON CODE
FLICKRflickrperk15 — 15% offSHOW COUPON CODE

The 25% code is the biggest discount and is best applied to a yearly or longer Flickr Pro plan, where the saving is largest in cash terms.

The 22% code is a close second and a useful backup if the 25% code does not work for your plan or region. The difference between the two is small on a single year.

The 15% code is the fallback. Flickr codes generally apply to the first payment only, so the renewal will be at the normal price unless a new offer appears.

Flickr runs its own Pro sales at times, often around the end of the year. If a site-wide sale is live, compare it with the code before paying; they usually cannot be combined.

Common questions

Is Flickr Pro worth it?

If you want unlimited full-resolution storage and stats, yes. For casual sharing, free Flickr may be enough.

What happens to my photos if Flickr Pro lapses?

The account returns to free limits. Check the current rules and download important photos first.

Do Flickr codes work on renewals?

Usually only on the first payment. Renewals are charged at the standard rate.

Can I cancel Flickr Pro?

You can turn off auto-renewal in account settings. Check the refund terms for your plan.
